This is only the behavior in Windows 7 Explorer, which is stupid as well. Windows XP only highlighted the folder name, not the whole line. Why Microsoft decided to make this easy operation unnecessarily difficult, I have no idea, but I've experienced the same pain with them too.
Just because the leader jumps off a cliff doesn't mean you should too.
