Over the last 12 months I've had four of my websites hacked. The fourth one was hacked just two days ago. These are four different websites, one was hosted on blue host, two on hostgator, and another was hosted with another web host.
I originally thought that they were compromising the servers themselves, but the fact that this has been spread out over multiple web hosts over multiple months leads me to believe that they are somehow getting my passwords.
Perhaps some sort of sniffing software is the culprit. I’ve run Malwarebytes as well is the Windows 7 antivirus software on my computer each time one of my sites was hacked. And it finds nothing. After the third hacking I reinstalled the Windows 7 operating system from scratch. I use the Windows 7 firewall. And I just downloaded the Windows 7 firewall control utility - after this fourth hacking - so that I have to manually give permission to every single outgoing connection.
Due to this pattern I am starting to suspect that it might have something to do with Filezilla. If I use sFTP will that stop sniffers from being able to read the passwords? Or if there is a Trojan sniffer on my computer will it still be able to get access to the passwords even if I use sFTP?
I’m at a bit of a loss, very concerned, because it’s become a pattern and keeps occurring. How on earth are they getting into my sites?
I don’t understand how it is happening since I run antivirus software and it never finds anything. I would consider myself an advanced computer user I’ve studied computer science and I do a bit of programming. So I’m not an idiot who clicks on email attachments. And I never download from un-trusted websites. Is it possible that because I have not been using sFTP someone could be sniffing out my passwords while they are being sent?
The only other thing I can think of is… As I surf the Internet and visit websites they are somehow automatically installing a Trojan onto my computer and then sniffing Filezilla? But then you would think that this would be happening to every single person on the Internet just about.
